Special Treats: Chinchilla Cookies

Chinchilla GranolaWhen we had our first chinchilla baby we talked to our breeder and asked about additional nutrition that mom would need. She suggested we should put some powered milk and multi-grain baby cereal in with her food. Well that didn’t work well. The powder would just settle to the bottom of the bowl, which produced a whole bunch of wasted alfalfa pellets. She would dig down to the powder and toss the pellets into the bottom of the cage. To correct this problem I made some “Chinchilla Cookies”.

  • Make a bowl of loose oatmeal and let it cool. (1 cup oats and 3 cups water).
  • Add to the cold oatmeal:
  • one more cup of un-cooked oats.
  • Half cup of powdered milk.
  • Half cup dry multi-grain baby cereal flakes.
  • Stir it all together.
  • Add a heaping tablespoon of p-nut butter.
  • Stir again.

If you need to make it thicker, add a bit of flour. If thinner, add water, until it is a good “cookie dough” consistency. Drop teaspoonfuls on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 until they are brown. 20-35 min. I then run the cookies through my food processor and coarse chop them to a granola size. Leave them out until they are completely dry. The chinchillas will love it. It has a lot of extra protein and vitamins for the nursing mom. Don’t replace the alfalfa pellets. They need their green vegetable matter as the major part of their diet. This is a better treat than the stuff you buy at the pet shop. Who knows what is in that stuff.
